School Organisation

At the time of printing the number on roll at The Gateway School is 250 and with the organisation for 2007/08 shown in the following paragraph.

The School is divided into two departments, Infant and Junior and for September 2006 there will be 10 classes. The staff in September will consist of Headteacher, 2 Assistant Headteachers who share one class, 9 class teachers with one part-time teacher providing curriculum support. All classes also receive support from our teaching assistants.

The Infant Department will have four classes, one Foundation, three Year 1/2. The Junior Department has six classes, three Year 3/4 and three Year 5/6. The classes are very carefully structured to ensure that all children are working at the appropriate level.

Curriculum

The Curriculum for Key Stages (KS 1) and (KS 2) is carefully planned to ensure that children experience all aspects of the programmes of study specified in the National Curriculum.

CORE SUBJECTS - English, Mathematics and Science
FOUNDATION SUBJECTS - History, ICT, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Music and Physical Education.

The children will often be working within topics in a cross-curricular way but the core subjects will also have their own slot so that the appropriate emphasis is given. Careful records will be kept of the children's progress to ensure that they are given tasks commensurate with their level of understanding.

The Foundation Stage pupils follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum and their progress is recorded in the Oxfordshire Pupil Profile.

Children use Information Communication Technolody in all areas of the curriculum. All classrooms have computers and an ICT suite with 16 wireless operated laptops was added in September '04 which is used widely for ICT skills teaching with whole class groups. Parents/carers will be asked to complete an Internet Permission form when their child enters the school.

If required, details of the Curriculum may be obtained from the Head Teacher.

Special Needs Provision

We have a Special Needs Co-ordinator in school who is responsible for maintaining the registers of children with Special Educational Needs. She liaises closely with class teachers. Parents are fully involved as soon as any specific need is identified, and are encouraged to work in partnership with the class teacher and special needs co-ordinator. A termly review is held for all these children when parents will be informed about the individual education programme their child is receiving. In addition children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs will have that statement reviewed annually.

A register of Gifted and Talented children is maintained by Mr Long once these children have been identified by class teachers.

Homework
All children are expected to read at home every day. A home/school record book is provided to assist in this activity. Children are given homework regularly and the amount varies according to age. A copy of our homework policy will be given to you when your child joins Gateway.

Religious Education

Religious Education is studied in accordance with the county agreed syllabus. In addition to Christianity, two other world religions Judaism and Hinduism are included.

Collective Worship
It is hoped that all children will take part in morning assembly. The whole school assembles together on two days each week, Monday and Wednesday. Visiting clergy take Wednesday morning assemblies on a regular basis. On the other days KS1 and KS2 assemble separately.

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Collective Worship (and Religious Education) if they so wish, but a discussion with the Headteacher is suggested before any decision is reached on this matter.

Sex Education

The sex education programme will be taught within the health and science programmes and will reflect the PSHE policy. It is seen as one important component of the whole school policy for personal and social development. It is therefore taught within the ethos of trust and co-operation, raising self-esteem and responsibility for self, others, one's own actions and responsibility for family friends, school and wider community.

Sex education starts from the earliest age and follows the children developmentally through the school. Children will explore values and attitudes that will enable them to separate fact from fiction and to have the confidence to be able to make informed choices without prejudice.

During years 5 and 6 in the KS 2 department the children receive a talk by their teachers and the school nurse on their approaching puberty. Parents are always informed beforehand and given the option of withdrawing their children if they so wish.

The Governors' policy statement on Sex Education is available for scrutiny at the school if required. The Governors decision is that Sex Education will be an integral part of the PSHE programme, across the Key Stages as appropriate. If you require further information regarding the PSHE policy it will be readily available.

Educational Visits

Learning by first hand experience is of considerable value in education. With this in mind we involve the children in a wide range of visits designed to bring reality to their studies. These are generally day visits but in the summer term the year 6 children are involved in a week?s residential visit to North Wales, enabling them to compare that environment with the area they have studied at other times during the year. When arrangements are made for pupils to leave the school site to participate in activites elsewhere (e.g. for an educational visit) the pupil's parents will normally be given, in advance, details of the proposed arrangements. Parents will be asked in advance to give permission for visits within the local vicinity for the whole school year.

School Policy on Charging for School Activities.
The 1988 Education Act introduced changes to the law about charging for school activities. The Governors policy statement is as follows:

Gateway School will request compulsory contributions only in the following cases:

* Board and lodging on residential visits. (The charge may be remitted for pupils whose parents are on income support, on any trip in school hours or what is required by the syllabus for the National Curriculum).

* Private music tuition arranged by the school ? this does not include music tuition provided by the LEA.

*Optional extras taking place wholly or mainly outside school hours.

*Costs of transport from pupils' home to an activity not provided by the school.

*The supply of ingredients and materials for practical subjects if parents have indicated in advance a wish to own the finished project. This would be by agreement slip.

Each request will stress that there is no obligation for parents to contribute. Pupils will not be treated differently whether or not their parents contribute. However, if sufficient voluntary contributions are not received from parents, the activity may then be cancelled for all pupils.

A full policy statement from the Education Department is available for inspection at the school.
